Standard N173 sized cabinet shot by a local photographer as were all of the poses for n172/N173 Old Cigarettes cards from Goodwin & Co. This is an unknown N172 pose of Chicago Maroons Catcher James E. "Jim" McCauley who tossed around in the majors for a couple of years in 1884-1886 and then played with the Maroons in 1888, his only year on a card. Oddly most of that time was spent at first base and not catching. The photo has the Goodwin & Co copyright 1888 etched in the negative, as well as McCauley C. Chic. W.A. just barely visible under his feet. Frank A. Place, worked at Gehrig Studios and was the photographer of this shot and was responsible for taking all of the Goodwin photos of the Chicago Maroons. Note that McCauley is holding a bat behind his back, a very unusual pose not seen on other Old Judge cards. The cabinet is in very nice condition, showing just a few minor blemishes front and back, which are far outweighed by the importance of this new pose discovery.
